The question “Could you make a chess set out of these characters?” Is actually a pretty good indicator of the strength of a franchise’s character development.
How would Hannibal look as a chess set?
Is Will Graham the King piece, only able to move one step at a time but whom everything hinges on? Who is Hannibal Lecter? The queen?
Obviously romanticized.
I think Hannibal is the Queen, he moves and kills in every direction, he can do everything and if he disappears from the chess set of your opponent, you sigh of relief.
Jack is the Rook. He goes straight on his way, he doesn’t care if someone is crushed while he is moving.
Bedelia is the Bishop. If she just passes by you, you shiver, but if she crosses your path you can be dead.
Abigail is the King. Everyone seems to be there to protect her, in reality she risks her life every step she makes.
And Will is the Knight. You can’t always predict where he moves. He can end up right on top of you or near you, you can’t always be sure. The Queen fears him, because he is the only one who can attack out of the blue, without being seen.
The Pawns are all the others. Important because they are on the front line, but they can’t do very much from where they are.
PS I love chess so much and I always lose mostly because I think about them as living creatures like I just did.
